Axial Seamount is one of the most active volcanoes on the planet. It lies deep beneath the surface of the sea almost 300 miles west of the coast of Oregon. The Oregon Field Guide crew joined Oregon State University volcanologist, Bill Chadwick, and his team on a 2022 quest to discover what Axial can teach us about predicting volcanic eruptions elsewhere. • Chadwick, along with Scott Nooner, a professor of geophysics at University of North Carolina Wilmington forecast a 2015 Axial eruption about seven months in advance. • Half the people in the Pacific Northwest live within about 60 miles of an active volcano. Mount Hood, Mount Rainier, Three Sisters, Mount St. Helens and Mount Shasta are all characterized as very high-risk volcanoes by the U.S. Geological Survey. But only one — Mount St. Helens — has erupted in our lifetimes. • Learn more: https://www.opb.org/article/2023/03/1... • The research featured in this video was supported in part by the National Science Foundation. • @NSFInnovation @NSFScience • Chapters • 0:03 Bill and the Volcano, Bill Chadwick heads out to research the Axial Seamount • 0:57 What life on the ship used to be like • 1:27 What is the most active volcano in the Pacific Northwest • 2:12 Axial Seamount, a shield volcano • 3:03 The recovery of the pressure recording instrument that has been on the seafloor for two years • 3:56 AUV Sentry, high-resolution mapping of the seafloor • 4:47 Bill's research measuring the movement of the volcano and use of Jason, the remotely controlled submarine • 6:04 Bill Chadwick's start as a volcanologist • 7:10 The first accurate prediction of a volcanic eruption forecast • 8:52 Blood-Belly Comb Jelly, Lampocteis Cruentiventer and fun on the ship • 11:08 Last 36 hours on the ship • For more stories like this visit OPB online at https://opb.org • --- • Oregon Public Broadcasting aims to elevate and amplify the community, connect Oregon and its neighbors, and illuminate a wider world through stories.
