The function of vein valves and their role in venous circulation • The venous blood from the lower limbs undergoes a great effort to ascend towards the heart. The flow is against gravity and requires the contraction of the leg muscles to propel it. To prevent the blood from going back down, the veins have valves that only open in one direction, allowing the blood to rise, but preventing the blood from flowing down to the legs again. After a new muscle contraction, a new stream of blood is ejected upwards and the valve opens again. And so on. Hence the importance of walking and exercising.
