Learn what Overset text is within InDesign and how to easily fix it. Details below... • Patreon: / michaelbullo • 0:00 - What is Overset Text • Overset text in InDesign is the situation created when a text frame is not large enough to display all of the text it contains. InDesign visually shows this problem by displaying a small red plus sign in the bottom right corner of a text frame. • 0:46 - InDesign Alerts of Overset at Export • The overset warning that appears on text boxes is quite subtle and potentially easy to overlook. However, should a document that contains overset text be exported to a format such as PDF, InDesign will display a warning dialog box that includes which pages contain overset text. • 1:22 - Fix #1: Expand Text Frame • Enlarging the text frame so that all of the text can be seen is the first obvious fix for overset text. • 1:43 - Fix #2: Thread a New Text Frame • Clicking and releasing the mouse on the overset icon will allow for a threaded (connected) text frame to be created. The new text frame can be dragged out or simply clicking on the page will have InDesign create a new text box with boundaries defined by the page margins. • 3:40 - Fix #3: Edit in Story Editor • With a text frame selected, the option Edit in Story Editor can be activated via the Edit menu. This opens a new window that contains all of the text within the selected text frame, including the overset text that normally can't be seen. The text within the Story Editor can be edited and any changes will immediately be shown in the associated text frame.
