Red Lake and Bicaz Gorge, a Short History, Harghita, Romania • Red Lake is a natural dam lake, located in the foothills of Hasmas mountains, near the city Gheorgheni, Harghita County. • It is the largest natural mountain lake in Romania name from Red Creek, crossing layers of red, oxides and hydroxides of iron. • Access to the lake can be done from the city Gheorgheni, the village which is situated on the railway Brasov-Deda and on Route 12. • The lake formed recently, one day in July 1837. • Then, after a series of storms and torrential rains, from Killer Mountain broke off a piece and blocked Licas creek, Sheep creek and Red creek. • The Witnesses of existing natural calamities since then, are the spruce stumps remained in the water. • The purple reflection of Suhardului in the lake , the presence of reddish silt brought by creek Red and the reddish limestone around it, have made the shepherds to give it the name of Red Lake. • Only in 1857, three tourists from Gheorgheni stopped on its banks, amazed and charmed by the wild beauty of the mountain and lake view lime. • They told everyone that they had found a piece of paradise. • Since then, attracted by the natural beauty of the lake, the richness of flora, fauna, many tourists have crossed paths of this region. • Restaurants in the area offering the tourists traditional dishes and famous Kurtos Kolak • '' Kurtos 'in Hungarian means the pipe or chimney and it is obvious that the name comes from the similarity to these objects. • According to Albert Yoltan first official document dates back to kurtos's 1450, and the first known recipe is in 1784, the Countess Mikes Mary Zabala. • But it is assumed that the product would have oldest origins. • In 1910, it started building up the road from Gheorgheni to Red Lake, done up until a place called Hell Neck , and only in 1937 was completed road connecting Transylvania to Moldova. • Surrounding the lake are rich fauna and flora, dominated coniferous forests mixed with hazel, willow, mountain slopes around growing fir, maple and aspen and between animals inhabited by lynx, chamois, wolves, deer, wild boars . • Downstream the Red Lake, starts Bicaz Gorgebetween the Eastern Carpathians, on the river Bicaz, making the link between Transylvania and Moldova. • It has a length of 8 kilometers from Red Lake to Bicaz Ardelean village. • The limestone walls of Bicaz Gorge are a result of their sculpting by fast waters of the Bicaz river. • The Bicaz Gorge belongs to National Park Bicaz-Hasmas and it has following protected areas: the Red Lake, Bicaz Gorge and Hasmasul Mare. • The road of Bicaz Gorge consists of dizzying switchbacks.
