Wait and see… • We could go from a pile of dust • To sedimentary, metamorphic, igneous • In the rock, rock, rock, rock cycle • It could take us seconds, or a million years • But we can’t wait to see what kind appears • In the rock, rock, rock, rock cycle • Sedimentary: • I’m sedimentary, like coal and flint • Sometimes I keep fossils preserved within • The sediments get compacted together • And then I’m worn down by erosion and weather • Sandstone, siltstone, limestone, shale • Conglomerate and rock salt as well! • Metamorphic: • Deep underground metamorphic rock gets warm • With heat and pressure we morph and transform • And if we have layers, it’s a wavy slice • Like quartzite, marble, schist, and gneiss • Igneous: • Temperatures rising to hot lava pools • Magma crystallizes as it cools • We igneous rocks are all over the planet • Like obsidian and pumice, don’t take us for granite • If we cool off fast, we’re extrusive • If it’s thousands of years, we’re intrusive • If it’s millions of years, we’re plutonic • Yes, igneous rocks are iconic! • “Well, ya gonna join in?” • All: • We could go from a pile of dust • To sedimentary, metamorphic, igneous • In the rock, rock, rock, rock cycle • It could take us seconds, or a million years • But we can’t wait to see what kind appears • In the rock, rock, rock, rock • Rock, rock, rock, rock • Rock, rock, rock, rock cycle! • Copyright © 2022 Hopscotch
