Cyril Tawney (1930-2005) was an English singer-songwriter, specialising in the traditional songs of the West of England and songs of the sea. He was a full-time professional folksinger for 45 years, a record in Britain. • This song describes the daily life of a sailor in the Royal Navy (often nicknamed The grey funnel line from the battleship grey of its livery), based on Tawney's own life. The song has been recorded by the Silly Sisters (June Tabor and Maddy Prior), and this recording was used in the opening title sequence of the film Sirens , starring Hugh Grant. • It is sung here by Frogs in Ginger at the Saturday concert of the reunion of the Hong Kong Folk Society at Halsway Manor, Somerset, in July 2014. • Lyrics and chords: • .......................... G • Don't mind the rain or the rolling sea, • ..................................................... D • The weary night never worries me • ........................... G ....................... C7 • But the hardest time in a sailor's day • .......................... Em . C .... D ...... G • Is to watch the sun as it dies away • ...................... Em .............. C ... D ...... G • It's one more day on the Grey Funnel Line. • The finest ship that sailed the sea • Is still a prison for the likes of me. • But give me wings like Noah's dove, • I'd fly up harbour to the girl I love. • It's one more day on the Grey Funnel Line. • There was a time my heart was free • Like a floating spar on the open sea. • But now the spar is washed ashore, • It comes to rest at my real love's door. • It's one more day on the Grey Funnel Line. • Every time I gaze behind the screws • Makes me long for old Peter's shoes. • I'd walk right down that silver lane • And take my love in my arms again. • It's one more day on the Grey Funnel Line. • Oh Lord, if dreams were only real • I'd have my hands on that wooden wheel. • And with all my heart I'd turn her round • And tell the boys that we're homeward bound. • It's one more day on the Grey Funnel Line. • I'll pass the time like some machine • Until blue water turns to green. • Then I'll dance on down that walk ashore • And sail the Grey Funnel Line no more. • And sail the Grey Funnel Line no more. • You can see a playlist of videos from the Hong Kong Folk Society Reunion here: • Hong Kong Folk Society Reunion July 2014 • Lyrics and chords of many of my songs are no longer available, as my website has expired.
