This song was collected by John Lomax. The following quote is attributed to Alan Lomax: Even cowboys and muleskinners acknowledged that the ox driver had a precision, virulence, and ingenuity in his profanity that no one could match. His animals literally wouldn't pull unless he lashed at them with a tremendous string of oaths. This violent song, which John Lomax collected from Herman Weaver in the Texas pine woods, comes out of the tough bandit-ridden Missouri Hills of the 1860s. • I first heard it sung by Odetta on the first album of hers I ever heard - and owned - My Eyes Have Seen. • It has been recorded by several other artists, including The Brothers Four and The Seekers. • Sorry - there seems to be some strange glitch in the recording, but maybe no one will notice. • Lyrics and chords: • .......... Em ........... B7 .. Em • It was early in October-o • .................................. B7... Em • I hitched my team in order-o • ................................ G .. Em • To ride the hills of Saludio • ........... Am ......................... Am ......................... Em • To me rol, to me rol, to my rideo. • I pop my whip and I bring the blood • I make the leaders take the mud • We grab the wheels and we turn them around • One long pull and we’re on hard ground. • When I got there the hills were steep • `T would make a tender person weep • To hear me curse and pop my whip • And see my oxen pull and slip. • When I get home I’ll have revenge • I’ll have my family, I’ll have my friends • Ill say goodbye to the whip and line • And drive no more in the wintertime • Lyrics and chords of many of my songs are no longer available, as my website has expired. I am currently posting lyrics to the information panels on all my videos and those that are too long to post in full will be found on my new website: https://raymondsfolkpage.wordpress.com
