The Collegeville neighborhood in Birmingham Al is home to the The Historic Bethel Baptist Church. During the the civil rights movement it was fire bombed 3 times. The median household income in Collegeville is $17,650 per year. During the pandemic the church noticed an increase of people in their parking lot to use their wifi. They received a all grant to add access points on the outside of their building. • Through Open Broadband LLC's relationship with the Microsoft Airband Team, we learned of the church's efforts and the need of this community. Since November we have been working with Bethel Baptist Church, Woodlawn United and Councilman JT Moore to plan a network and secure finding to offer affordable highspeed internet to the Collegeville neighborhood. • Today the Birmingham City Council unanimously approved the resolution for the project. We are hopeful that Collegeville is just the first of many neighborhoods that we are able to serve. There are approximately 35,000 households in the Birmingham area that are unconnected because of affordability, dated infrastructure, and lake of digital skills. We hope to be a positive influence to help solve these issues. • #iLoveMyJob #digitaldivide #digitalinclusion
