These compounds most frequently occur in plants combined with sugar and so are classified as glycosides that are further divided into four main groups. These are iridoid glycosides (aucubin, harpagoside), nonglycosylated or simple iridoids (loganin), secoiridoids (gentiopicroside), and bisiridoids, formed by dimerization of iridoids and secoiridoids. Iridoid glycosides are a group of compounds that have a structure related to iridodial. • Almost 600 iridoid glycosides have been described from 57 families of plants. Iridoids have been regarded as defense chemicals against herbivores and pathogens, since iridoid glycosides generally have bitter taste and have antifeedant and growth inhibitory activities against insects.
