Evolution, not revolution, is the order of the day in Geneva. But 2003 brought the world an alternative Sub with a flair for the dramatic: the 50th anniversary Submariner 16610LV, better known to Rolex collectors as Kermit. • And one glance at this frog confirms that it's a rare breed. Rolex broke with tradition and endowed the anniversary Submariner with a metallic green bezel that explodes in direct light. Unlike the current ceramic dial on the green 116610LV Hulk, Kermit features a distinctly reflective finish that gleams in a fashion that ceramic simply cannot match. • Beyond the bezel, the Rolex 16610LV marked the Submariner-line debut of the so-called maxi dial, a set of larger hands and indexes originally launched on the Yacht-Master of 1991. Against the backdrop of a lacquered black dial, the bold white gold applied indexes declare themselves with force. • While the latest 116610 generation of Submariner has adopted the Maxi dial in series production, the combination of this dial with the finer case of the 16610 is an exclusive advantage of the Kermit. Note the gradual taper of the lugs into the upper links of the Oyster bracelet; the case flows into the links with fluid progression. • In contrast, the current Submariner case has grown to massive proportions at the lugs, and the Oyster's links have not kept pace. This oversight creates an aesthetic peccadillo at the point where the newest Submariners join with their bracelets. Kermit 1, Hulk 0. • With the 2010 arrival of The Incredible Hulk, the 16610LV Kermit was consigned to history. But the frog lives in the hearts and collections of many ardent Rolex fans. Now considered one of the most memorable and desirable modern Rolex Submariner references, the 16610LV is a sought-after collectible. • This Rolex Submariner Kermit is available from thewatchbox.com with full factory boxes, manuals, and documents. Critically, the signature green bezel of this unique Submariner is in like-new condition and maintained the integrity of the model. Video and content by Tim Mosso.
