Celebrating the holiday with a spinning deep-sea Christmas tree 🌀🎄💫 • • Siphonophores are colonial animals composed of many integrated parts. Each siphonophore part is highly specialized to serve a function such as swimming, eating, digesting, reproducing, or defending the colony. The swimming bells on top propel the colony. This species, Forskalia formosa, moves in a dizzying 360 degree whirl as it swims upwards through the water. Siphonophores are fragile, breaking into many pieces under the slightest forces, making them difficult to sample. So, we count ourselves lucky that we get to observe this beautiful behavior right in the siphonophore's home— the deep sea—using our remotely operated vehicles. Happy holidays from the deep, blue heart of our planet 🌊💙 • ROV Doc Ricketts dive #1168 • Depth: 400 meters (1,300 feet) • Video editor: Kyra Schlining • Music: FairyTale Walz (YouTube Audio Library)
