Thirty-Six Stratagems • The Thirty-Six Stratagems, a collection of Chinese proverbs and tactics, have been attributed to various historical figures, such as Sun Tzu and Zhuge Liang, but their true author remains unknown to historians. It is widely believed that these stratagems originated from a combination of written records and oral traditions, with different versions compiled by various authors throughout Chinese history. Some stratagems even reference events that occurred long after the presumed authors' lifetimes. • The basis of the current version of the Thirty-Six Stratagems is an original hand-copied paperback, discovered in China's Shaanxi province, which lacks information about its date and author. In 1941, a local publisher printed this version, bringing it into public awareness. However, it wasn't until September 16, 1961, when a review of the stratagems was published in the Guangming Daily newspaper, affiliated with the Chinese Communist Party, that their popularity began to grow. The stratagems were subsequently reprinted and widely distributed. • The Thirty-Six Stratagems are organized into a preface, six chapters with six stratagems each, and an incomplete afterword that lacks text. The first three chapters primarily describe tactics for advantageous situations, while the last three chapters contain stratagems more suited for disadvantageous situations. The original text of the stratagems follows a concise and laconic style commonly found in Classical Chinese. Each proverb is accompanied by a brief comment, usually only a sentence or two long, explaining its applicability to military tactics. These 36 proverbs are derived from various battle scenarios in Chinese history and folklore, primarily from the Warring States period and the Three Kingdoms period. • The Thirty-Six Stratagems continue to be studied and revered for their strategic wisdom, offering insights into military tactics and beyond.
