Pickwick Papers Nos. 19-20 • Chapter 53: Comprising the final Exit of Mr. Jingle and Job Trotter, with a great Morning of business in Gray’s Inn Square—Concluding with a Double Knock at Mr. Perker’s Door • Chapter 54: Containing some Particulars relative to the Double Knock, and other Matters/among which certain interesting Disclosures relative to Mr. Snodgrass and a Young Lady are by no Means irrelevant to this History • Chapter 55: Mr. Solomon Pell, assisted by a Select Committee of Coachmen, arranges the affairs of the elder Mr. Weller • Chapter 56: An important Conference takes place between Mr. Pickwick and Samuel Weller, at which his Parent assists—An old Gentleman in a snuff-coloured Suit arrives unexpectedly • Chapter 57: In which the Pickwick Club is finally dissolved, and everything concluded to the Satisfaction of Everybody • Edward G. Pettit with cohosts Kevin Quinn, Courtney Krolczyk, James Armstrong, and Jacob Romanow • https://rosenbach.org/pickwick-monthl... • And so after twenty months of adventures, the story of Mr. Pickwick, Sam Weller, Alfred Jingle, and all the Pickwickians comes to an end in a double issue (for two shillings). Characters move to the West Indies, get married, come into inheritances, and some just retire. We’ll talk about how the story finally wraps up and also the experience of reading it over such a long period of time, just like the first readers of Boz. • You can download a pdf of serial Nos.19-20 here: • https://rosenbach.org/wp-content/uplo... • The final issue of The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club was published at the end of October 1837 in a double issue (Nos. 19 and 20) containing the final five chapters of the story and also extra textual material (a title page, table of contents, instructions for the binder, etc.) for readers who wanted to take all of their serial parts and have them bound into one volume. • Phiz’ illustrations are at The Charles Dickens Illustrated Gallery here: • https://www.charlesdickensillustratio... • Mary and the Fat Boy • Weller and his Friends Drinking to Mr. Pell • Vignette Title (Tony Weller dunking Stiggins) • Note on the chapter numbers • When the serial was first published, Chapter 28 (“A Good-Humoured Christmas Chapter . . .”) was followed by Chapter 28 (“The Story of the Goblins . . .”). The chapter was just divided into two, but both given the same number. The Table of Contents for the first edition just put a little asterisk next to the Goblins chapter number. The Penguin Classics (2003) lists the two chapters as Ch 28 and Ch 28(ii). However most editions adjust the chapter numbers and the Goblin chapter becomes Ch 29 and so on until the end. This means after Ch 28, the chapter numbers in the original serial are all one behind the chapter numbers in most editions. When in doubt, check the chapter titles. • Join the Rosenbach Museum and Library for a monthly journey through Charles Dickens’ The Pickwick Papers. The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club was the first serialized novel written by Dickens and was published in 20 monthly parts (2-3 chapters per month) from March 1836-October 1837. Edward G. Pettit and a rotating set of Dickensian cohosts will talk about each serialized part once a month from March 2023-October 2024. You will relive Dickens’ funniest novel just as his first readers did. • The Rosenbach has in its collections the complete serial issues of The Pickwick Papers, a portion of the Pickwick manuscript, as well as many first editions, the earliest surviving literary manuscript, letters, ephemera, and a lock of Charles Dickens’ hair. • Pickwick Monthly • https://rosenbach.org/events/pickwick... • Donate to the Rosenbach • https://rosenbach.org/ways-to-give/do... • Become a Rosenbach member • https://rosenbach.org/ways-to-give/me... • Rosenbach Programs and Courses • https://rosenbach.org/events/ • Facebook Pickwick Monthly • / pickwickmonthly • University of Victoria Library Serials Collection • https://vault.library.uvic.ca/collect...
