This aircraft is one of three airworthy Spitfires currently in New Zealand (as at 2019). Known as ZK WDQ (civilian registration) or MH 367 (Royal Air Force designation) it was originally built at the Castle Bromwich factory in the UK in July 1943. • Built as Mark IX with a Merlin 61 engine, the aircraft saw Wartime Service initially with No 65 Squadron RAF when it undertook its first operational sortie on 15 Aug 1943. The last combat sortie flown in the aircraft was on 18 April 1945. • MH 367 was scrapped in 1948, and it was eventually rebuilt in the USA using components of several aircraft, flying again for the first time after its restoration, in November 2006. The aircraft wears the colour scheme of Squadron leader Colin Gray, New Zealand's highest scoring WW2 ace. • During the Second World War, only a handful of Spitfire aircraft were converted to a two-seat configuration, and these were generally one-off customised modifications. The development of the two-seat trainer version of the aircraft, either the Tr.9 or the T Mk IX, was a post-war modification programme which began in 1946. Around 19 of these types were built. • Warbird Adventure Rides at Ardmore Airport in Auckland (New Zealand) operate the aircraft, and you can pay for a flight to put yourself in the pilot's seat and 'relive' the experience of the 'The Few', those immortal fighter pilots of the Battle of Britain.
