Die zentral-georgische Stadt Tskaltubo war in der UDSSR ein populärer Erholungsort, bekannt für die Bäderkultur und das heilende Quellwasser. Bereits in der ersten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts öffneten die ersten Badehäuser und in den 1920ern die ersten Sanatorien. 1931 wurde Tskaltubo offizielles Erholungszentrum der Sowjetregierung und war präferiertes Urlaubsziel von Josef Stalin. Dabei wurde die Stadt nicht nur von der sowjetischen Elite besucht (das Recht auf Erholung war Teil der sowjetischen Verfassung) sondern ebenfalls von allen Teilen der Gesellschaft. So entstanden Sanatorien für einzelne Berufsgruppen. Während des Zweiten Weltkriegs dienten die Gebäude vorübergehend als Krankenhäuser. Nach dem Krieg stieg die Popularität ständig an, mit mehr als 5000 Betten in 19 Sanatorien und Hotels, bis 1991 mit der Unabhängigkeit Georgiens die komplette Tourismusindustrie zusammenbrach. • Während des Abchasien-Konflikts 1992-1993 wurden einige der leerstehenden Sanatorien und Hotels für die Unterbringung von Geflüchteten genutzt. Dieser Zustand hält, 30 Jahre später, allerdings teilweise bis heute an. Viele Familien aus den abtrünnigen Regionen Abchasien und Süd-Ossetien leben dort nach wie vor unter sehr ärmlichen Bedingungen. Und auch wenn selbst die betreffenden Gebäude frei zugänglich sind, habe ich mich dafür entschieden, die offensichtlich bewohnten Areale aus Respekt vor der Privatsphäre der Menschen nicht zu besuchen. • The central Georgian town of Tskaltubo was a popular resort in the USSR, known for its spa culture and healing spring water. The first bathhouses opened in the first half of the 19th century and the first sanatoriums in the 1920s. In 1931, Tskaltubo became an official recreation center for the Soviet government and was a favorite holiday destination for Joseph Stalin. The city was visited not only by the Soviet elite (the right to rest was part of the Soviet constitution) but also by all sections of society. This is how sanatoriums for individual occupational groups came into being. During World War II, the buildings temporarily served as hospitals. After the war, the popularity increased steadily, with more than 5000 beds in 19 sanatoriums and hotels, until 1991, with Georgia's independence, the entire tourism industry collapsed. • During the 1992-1993 Abkhazia conflict, some of the empty sanatoriums and hotels were used to house refugees. Now, 30 years later, not much has changed. Many families from the breakaway regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia continue to live there in very poor conditions. And while even these buildings are freely accessible, I have chosen not to visit the obviously inhabited areas out of respect for people's privacy. • Sanatorium Sakartvelo • Das weithin sichtbare Sanatorium Sakartvelo wurde im Stile des sowjetischen Modernismus zwischen 1974 und 1983 erbaut und grenzt sich optisch deutlich von den meisten Hotels und Sanatorien in Tskaltubo ab. Wie andere Einrichtungen ihre Ball- und Konzertsääle haben, so war Sakartvelo mit einem grossen Pool- und Wellnessbereich ausgestattet. • The Sakartvelo sanatorium, which can be seen from afar, was built in the style of Soviet modernism between 1974 and 1983 and is visually distinct from most hotels and sanatoriums in Tskaltubo.
