As is typical to Liszt's transcriptions, the original nature of the music remains, but with elegant virtuosic flourishes accompanying the melody. The theme here undergoes a development similar to what Liszt presents in his 3rd Concert Etude S144 (Db Major); the main theme is first exposed in the treble with a flowing arpeggio accompaniment. We then have a reprise but with the melody in the bass this time. The second theme is presented in E major, an augmented fifth higher. This again resembles the concert etude, with the exact same modulation. (Db to A) • After returning to Ab major, a typical Lisztian virtuosic passage with the melody in the base again transitions us to a grandiose main theme representation again and eventually to the end of the piece. • Perhaps the epitome of Liszt's style, the Widmung transcription has grown to become one of his most known adaptations, right beside the opera transcriptions. • Sheet music: http://imslp.org/wiki/Myrthen,_Op.25_...) • Performance by Takashi Sato.
