Stölzel Cantata Saget der Tochter Zion siehe dein Heil kommt

This is Stölzel's earliest surviving cantata written for Advent Sunday 1720. Together with its companion piece Komm herein, du gesegneter des Herrn, it was performed either side of the sermon on December 1, 1720. • As with all the other cantatas from that year, the text begins with a biblical verse (Dictum). There then follows an inventive recitative where Stölzel interweaves Luther's chorale paraphrase of 'Veni redemptor Gentium' as Nun komm den Heiden Heiland - played by the strings - with a poetical gloss sung by the bass soloist. • The text is by Johann Knauer, Stölzel's brother-in-law. Dictum • Saget der Tochter Zion, siehe, dein Heil kommt. (Isaiah 52:11) • Tell the Daughter of Zion, behold, your salvation is coming. • 2. Recitative • Auf Zion! freue dich, • Dein Gnaden-Licht strahlt schon von weiten. • Dein Heil ist nah’, • Und dein Erlöser meldet sich • Den Himmels Weg dir zu bereiten. • Nu kommt der Heiden Heiland. • Auch dein verheiß’ner Trost, • D’rum sei getrost, • Dein Leid hat sich gewandt, • Und deiner Vater Hoffen • Hat höchst beglückt und selig zu getroffen. • Rise up, Zion! Rejoice, the light of grace shines upon you. Your salvation is near, and your Redeemer is coming to prepare for you the way to heaven. The sinners’ Saviour is approaching who is your promised comfort. So be comforted, your sorrow has transformed and the hope of your forefathers is being revealed with blessed favour. • 3. The night is over, you shadows, flee away. Righteousness appears as the sun, whose rays pour over the hills of Zion, splitting the darkness apart. • 4. Recitative • So siehe dann • Dein Heil du Tochter Zion an, • Jetzt zieht es bei dir ein, • Sieh’ aber nicht auf dich • Noch auf die Welt zurücke, • Weil alle diese Blicke • Von Baselisken sein, • Die dich mit böser Lust vergiften, • Und Seelen-Schaden stiften. • Behold your salvation, O Daughter of Zion, drawing near to you now. Don’t look upon yourself or behind you at the world, for those are glances of a basilisk, poisoning you with evil desire and torturing your soul. • 5. Aria • Öffnet euch, ihr Glaubens-Augen, • Denn nur eure Blicke taugen • Diese Gnade-Licht zu seh’n. • Wer sein Heil will recht vertrachten, • Muß, was irdisch ist, verachten, • Und die Eitelkeit verschmäh’n. • Öffnet euch … • Open, eyes of my heart, for only you can perceive the light of this grace. To gaze at the Saviour, one must despise earthly things and spurn vanity. • 6. Recitative • Mit diese Lichtes Schein • Stellt sich da Heil vor arme Seelen ein; • Denn ihr Erlöser zeiget sich, • Auf Zion freue dich! • With this radiant light the Saviour appears before lowly souls. Your Redeemer appears, rise up, Zion, and rejoice! • 7.
