Where do you fall on the supplement spectrum?! Some of my patients take nothing, and others come in with a huge list of supplements that we have to wade through and weed out what is unnecessary or even harmful. Like medications, supplements have risks and benefits! They arent automatically harmless just because they arent prescription, so be sure to always talk to your doctor before starting a supplement. For example, fish oil is a good supplement for many people, but not a good option for others - it thins the blood, so it can interact with blood thinning medications and needs to be held before surgery! • Prenatals and multivitamins are generally quite safe, but it is important to buy from a reputable company. I will do a reel soon on prenatals, but you want to find a vitamin brand that is third party tested for purity. I look for NSF certified supplements. • Before taking any fat soluble vitamin ( A, D, E, K) you should discuss and have your level checked by your doctor and/or take a dietary inventory with an RD to see if you are consuming enough of that vitamin in your diet. Fat soluble vitamins are stored in fat and cannot be easily urinated out if you take too much of it. Taking excessive amounts of fat soluble vitamins can have negative effects! (For example, if you regularly eat liver, you could be overdosing on vitamin A from liver alone, and should not take an additional vitamin A supplement.) • What topics would you like to see reels on soon!? • #doctortips #supplements #healthylifestyle #doctor
