An established entrepreneur and the pioneer of e-commerce in India, Mr. K. Vaitheeswaran connects three distinct, but substantial examples of the ‘Butterfly Effect’. In his first example, he credits the 1940-1965 ‘anti-Hindi agitation’ for the flourishment of English - the language that has played a significant role in the development of IT sectors in India. Secondly, he shares with us a challenge that he had to face in 1999 - setting up an online store without a shopkeeper; and how this paved the way for the initiation of e-commerce in India. The third is a delayed cricket test match between England and Australia on the 5th of January, 1971, that globalized the concept of ‘One Day Internationals’ or the ODIs. His talk highlights the potential of small ideas nesting in the minds of people that are unaware of it. • • After spending 14 years in the Murugappa Group and Wipro Infotech in various business development roles, K Vaitheeswaran was bitten by the internet bug and co-founded Fabmart.com in 1999 - India's first pure-play online retail company. This was later re-branded as Indiaplaza and he ran this company till 2013. He co-founded India's first e-commerce company Fabmart.com (later branded Indiaplaza). He has also co-founded India's first integrated retail company Fabmall - acquired by Aditya Birla Group in 2006 and re-branded as ‘More’ chain of stores. Currently, he mentors e-commerce and data analytics start-ups. • This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
