On this day in 1940, the Dunkirk evacuation ended. Here’s Movietone’s report. • Lord Gort arrives back in London signalling that the evacuation of the BEF from Flanders is nearly completed. The epic withdrawal was carried out courageously by the many small vessels bringing British and French troops from the beaches. • Planes fly over Dunkirk and everywhere fires rage. Bombs burst and wreckage is everywhere apparent. Ships are wrecked in the harbour and a British destroyer passes a transport at high speed. The Epic Of Dunkirk CU Lord Gort and other officers leave No 10 Downing Street. Troops boarding ships. French troops alongside, they give 'thumbs up' sign. WVS feeding troops. Troops on deck-chairs on beach, some eating and some sleeping. Mass shots of some of the craft that took part in the evacuation. Scenes of Dunkirk under bombardment.
