He started on a full-ride scholarship for architecture, but about a year into the program Kevin Sargent’s career path took a different turn. Now the fire chief for the Mt. Vernon Fire Department, Sargent got his first taste of the healthcare industry at Rend Lake College and decided he wanted to go into nursing. It was when he was waiting on admission into the nursing program that he took an EMT class where he found his true passion — helping others. Today Sargent credits a lot of his success to Rend Lake College. He said the communication skills he learned are instrumental for the job and talking with patients, while the architecture background helps when looking at building plans and codes. But he said the most integral part was the relationships he built along the way. “The friendships and the connections that we made, not only with the other students, but with the faculty — I still have those friendships today. I wouldn’t be where I’m at if it wasn’t for that start at Rend Lake College,” he said. • Thanks for choosing RLC, Chief Sargent. We’re happy you are looking out for us! • If you are interested in pursuing a career in healthcare, RLC can get you there. Start Your Journey at https://www.rlc.edu/allied-health.
