#probiotics #microscope #science #biology #experiment • Ever wondered what probiotics look like under microscope? • First I opened a probiotic capsule and dissolved it in PBS (phosphate buffer) and let it incubate at room temperature for a day. But I never could catch anything alive under microscope. In a way everything was in motion but I believe that was only brownian motion of dead cells. Next, it occurred to me that intestines have an anaerobic environment and most intestinal bacteria are obligate anaerobes and many of which fail to grow in the presence of oxygen. Therefore, in another test I removed air from the test tube using fire and let the cells incubate in the absence of oxygen. Only then could I see some viable cells under microscope!
