Part 1: 6 - 9 October 1973 (day 1 to day 4). • As the Israel-Palestine region once again descends into war, we look at the Yom Kippur War: a surprise attack on Israel launched almost exactly 50 years ago. • On 6 October 1973, a coalition of Arab armies led by Egypt and Syria launched a devastating surprise attack on Israel on the Jewish holy day of Yom Kippur. Launched with the aim of liberating territories occupied by Israel since the Six-Day War of 1967, the fighting soon brought about the intervention of both the United States and the Soviet Union. With both nuclear-armed superpowers supporting opposite sides in the conflict, the conflict quickly escalated from a localised clash into a Cold War flashpoint. • The first part of this series focuses on the opening moves of the war, starting with an interview with the Egyptian ambassador to the UK, Kamal E.
