Whats the difference between Prophylaxis and Scaling and Root Planing? • A regular dental cleaning cleans the surfaces of the teeth and the gumline. A scaling goes far down, below the gumline to clean the root surfaces. • The instrument will go below the gum tissue to clean the roots where the gum reaches the bone. It takes time and talent to do a scaling and root planing properly, but if you do, it will drastically reduce inflammation and can treat gum disease. • With a dental scaling, we remove the outer layer of cementum on the teeth so that theres a nice fresh surface for the gum tissue to reattach to. • The Scaling and Root Planing is a longer process that is used to treat periodontal disease in its earlier or more mild stages. • In more severe cases of periodontitis, we use a laser and the LANAP procedure to get rid of periodontal disease. • In less severe cases, a typical dental cleaning or Prophylaxis, would be adequate. • If you have any questions or would like to schedule an appointment, please visit our website, • https://www.drnemeth.com • We are happy to help you. • Joseph R.
