How to find the lower takeoff at Alcock Tarn, Grasmere . • If you walk up from the Wordsworth museum, at the top of the path you reach a grassy scoop facing due west. This is the lower takeoff. • The compression here can fool you into thinking there is stronger wind than there really is. • Also - typically the thermals are coming up the fellside, farther out away from the terrain. So if you lose the ridge lift you probably need to fly out over the valley to find rising air. • The lower takeoff works for a stronger day but for very light winds, it is better generally to walk upto Heron Pike on the ridge - the upper takeoff. This adds another 30 minutes of hiking but might save your flight from being a quick flydown. • This site only works westerly and perhaps NW / SW. • #paragliding
