Makahiki Opening at Windward Community College • Students and faculty from WCC Hawaiian Studies, ASUH and Ke Kumu Pali helped to facilitate the opening of the Makahiki season dedicated to Lono; akua of peace, fertility, bountiful harvests and competition. Students representing schools across the Koʻolau (Koʻolaupoko: Kailua Intermediate, Castle High, Ke Kula ‘o Samuel M. Kamakau, Hakipuʻu Learning Academy; Ko‘olauloa: Kahuku High School) took part in Makahiki festivities which included traditional games such as Oʻo ʻihe (spear throwing), haka moa (chicken fight duel), pā uma (standing arm wrestling), ulu maika and moa pāhe‘e (Hawaiian lawn darting), kūkini (sprint racing), and the crowd favorite hukihuki (tug-of-war). • Mahalo to all the schools, campus staff and students who took the time to put this event together.
