How do we quantify ductile vs brittle materials? One way would be to actually measure the amount of energy absorbed during fracture. We do this with impact fracture testing. Essentially, a blade is allowed to chop through a notched material and we observe the energy dissipated during fracture by observing the height of the blade before and after. Some materials have a ductile to brittle transition where we can observe the energy observed during fracture change over a temperature range. We can also observe this transition by examining fracture surfaces. In brittle regions we see smooth, ceramic-like fracture surfaces. In ductile regions we see rough surfaces. Ductile-Brittle transitions were responsible for the sinking of several ships during World War II! 2710 Liberty Ships were built in mild climates. There were 1500 ductile-brittle fractures which resulted in three Liberty Ships breaking completely in half and sinking! • More info at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liberty...
