It's a device using sound waves propagation (usually underwater) to ping distant objects underwater, such as submarines. The Sonar first emits an infrasonic or ultrasonic acoustic signal into the water. If something cross the path of the signal, it bounces back from the object and returns as an echo to the sonar.
