On the 9th of November 1989 an international press conference takes place, which is broadcast live on GDR television and radio. A new travel law for GDR citizens is announced, which should come into force the next day. The Council of Ministers had not yet approved the law. At 18:57 Günter Schabowski announces the new regulation on behalf of the politician Egon Krenz: • Private trips to foreign countries can be applied for without any preconditions [...]. The permits will be granted at short notice. [...] Permanent departures can be made via all border crossing points from the GDR to the FRG [...] . • When asked when this will come into force, the politician replies: Immediately . This triggers a mass movement. Thousands of GDR citizens storm to the border to cross it. It is a moment that goes down in history. • The archive material from 1989 shows two GDR citizens on Kurfürstendamm in West Berlin who are being interviewed by a reporter about the opening of the border.
