Boilers rely on a constant supply of regulated fuel pressure in order to maintain a proper firing rate. When firing with natural gas, regulators are used to do just that. A properly sized regulator can reduce or increase the inlet pressure to the burner as needed. But when foreign objects get into the regulator or the attached line is can create problems with maintaining the proper fuel pressure.
