A slight deficiency of iron causes anemia (fatigue/weakness), and a chronic deficiency can lead to organ failure. Conversely, too much iron leads to production of harmful free radicals, and interferes with metabolism causing damage to organs like the heart and liver. The body is able to regulate uptake of iron, so overdose is rare and usually only occurs when people take supplements. Iron from natural food sources, like the ones in this video, are considered safe and healthy, though non-heme (plant) iron is perhaps better regulated than heme (meat) iron. The current recommended daily allowance for iron is 18 milligrams (mg). • ---- • Photo Credits: • Liver: FotoosVanRobin • http://www.flickr.com/photos/fotoosva... • Oysters: • avlxy • http://www.flickr.com/photos/avlxyz/ • Squash Seeds: • Semarr • http://www.flickr.com/photos/semarr/ • Sesame Seeds: • Quinn.Anya • http://www.flickr.com/photos/quinnanya/ • Caviar: • The Evilist Monkey • http://www.flickr.com/photos/the_evil... • Sun Dried Tomatos: • Klearchos • http://www.flickr.com/photos/klearchos • Sunflower Seeds: • Phil Hawksworth • http://www.flickr.com/photos/philhawk... • Dried Apricots: • Interant Tightwad • http://www.flickr.com/photos/itineran... • Music for this video provided by Musopen • http://www.musopen.com/ • Song -- Danza Espanola, Op. 37, H. 142 - XII.
