PLEASE READ • The Canadians are expanding their territory D: • In all seriouseness, on the 26th of October 2024 we celebrated 80 years of liberation by the British, Scottish and Canadian Armed Forces. • The convoy started at the Sloedam (a connection between Walcheren and The Bevelanden, (Operation Vitality), where one of the most gruesome, chaotic and bloody battles of the 2nd World War was taking place (Battle of Walcheren Causeway), part of Battle of the Scheldt between the 5th Canadian Infantery, 52nd Lowland Division, Calgary Highlanders and the German Armed Forces. • This forgotten battle was important for the success of Operation Omaha Beach (D-Day) and the fall of the German Third Empire. • The Scheldt was the main route for supplying food, medical- and military equipment to the rest of the occupied territories, and was very heavily defended by the German Army located on Walcheren, a small island, connected by a narrow causeway called Sloedam, located at the Western Scheldt. • Walcheren was also an important location for the launch of V2 rockets, aimed towards London, Paris and the liberated Antwerp. • Without the Scheldt, the German Armed Forces could not sustain the war for long. • The battle was underestimated as the German Army had a strategic advantage and a massive defence system. The Allied Forces decided to bomb the dykes at Westkapelle, Ritthem, Vlissingen and Veere (inundiation of Walcheren) as a last drastic and desperate but necessary measure to defeat the German Army. Bombings lasted from the 3rd to the 24th of October 1944. It worked but at a high price. • The Garden of the Netherlands (As Reichs-Commisar Seyss-Inquart called it) was blown off the map and with many civilian casualties. • Repairs of the dykes took two years, but the salt water left its scars everywhere for many decades to come (especially farming lands). • Rebuilding (Marshall Plan) and pumping out the water was a major task, but we got our future back! • As a reminder of the liberation, most of the trees here are no older than 80 years. • Thank you for your service, brave men and women who fought for our freedom! • And thanks to the enthusiasts for letting me take part and film the convoy! • Leave a like (or dislike) and tell me what you think in the comment section! • Link to my Pinterest page (which sometimes gives you a sneak peak on future videos):   / sparrowracing   • Please contact me if you want to use this video or parts of it!
