Martin Luther publishes his 95 Point Thesis at Wittenberg, starting the Protestant Reformation. But how did we get here? • The Catholic Church is mired in corruption by the 16th century. From Pope Leo X to the humble parish priest, everyone was affected by simony, nepotism, absenteeism and pluralism. Several reforming heresies emerge - first the Waldensians, then the Lollards, then the Hussites. Europe is in the grip of Humanism and capitalism. Printing is universal and literacy is growing. This is the world Luther is born into. His parents send him to university, but after being almost struck by lightning, he decides to become a monk. • In 1517 Johann Tetzel goes on a great indulgence sale. Luther writes the 95 Point Thesis, dismissing indulgences and questioning the Pope's right to the Treasurehouse of Merit. Johannes Eck is sent to debate Luther and when he refuses to recant, he is excommunicated. In 1517 he is summoned to the Diet of Worms, where Charles V declares him an outlaw. • Bibliography: • Collinson, P (2006). The Reformation A History • https://amzn.to/3fLUgqG • McNeill, J T (1967).
