When Jojo Moyes’ book, Me Before You, was released in 2012, it was met with critical acclaim and became an international bestseller. Last week, her film adaptation – starring Emilia Clarke and Sam Claflin – became the subject of a social media backlash by disability rights campaigners for its portrayal of disability – because it tells story of a man who seeks assisted suicide following an accident which renders him quadriplegic. Here, Moyes talks to Stylist about the true story behind this powerful romance, and how her tale is not intended to send out a message on disability in general, but tells “only one person’s story.” • Me Before you is in cinemas nationwide Friday 3 June.
