Could Your Neck Pain be From Tight Lats

Pain and tightness can come from a muscle that is short. It can also come from a muscle that is constantly lengthened and hanging on at its end range. • Tight or overactive lats can pull on the neck, causing pain. Instead of stretching the neck more and further lengthening it, you’ll want to address the lats to unload your neck. A possible sign that this might be the case is if you notice your collarbones appear flattened instead of coming up at a slight angle. • You can approach this through passive movements, active movements, opposing movements, or a combo of the three. Passive movements can help decrease the tension and set the stage for the more active options, but then the active options will give you length and strength. • It’s important to remember that a tight muscle isn’t always a strong muscle. Oftentimes, it can live in a “no man’s land” of non-commitment, not being able to fully engage or fully let go. Getting a full concentric position first allows for better support and control for it to lengthen. • Another thing to consider is, why is it tight? Perhaps it is doing double duty and taking over for another area. One example here is the lats taking over for weakness in the middle traps and serratus. This can be another layer to investigate (and a video for another day! 🧐) • When it comes to a more permanent fix, it’s important to get to the source of the problem. Otherwise, you’re always mopping up water on the floor instead of addressing the leak in the ceiling. • --------------- ⬇️ ⬇️ ⬇️ --------------- • 👩🏻🏫 Check out our CEU courses for Health and Fitness Professionals: • 👩🏻💻 PCES - Pregnancy Postpartum Corrective Exercise Specialist • www.coreexercisesolutions.com/pces • 👩🏻💻 Pelvis Pro • www.coreexercisesolutions.com/pelvis-pro • ---------- • 00:00 Intro • 00:14 Lats • 01:14 Full Squat with Overhead Reach • 03:12 Single Arm Lat Pull in Half Kneeling • 06:41 Down Dog • • •
