Consequently, the most important part of a test sieve is its mesh. • The separation medium for most woven wire mesh is metal such as brass or stainless-steel, OR made up of a synthetic material, but there are also perforated metal plates AND flat metallic sheets with precision openings called electroformed mesh. • Separation Media or Mesh: • Woven-wire Brass and Stainless steel mesh • Non-metallic mesh • Electroformed mesh • Conventional ASTM or ISO test sieves have a woven-wire mesh with a range of opening sizes from 125mm to 20µm (5.0in to No.635) and is fabricated on large industrial looms in very precise weave patterns. Woven-wire BRASS mesh, now desirable for gradation analysis of certain hazardous materials because of its resistance to sparking, had been the favorite mesh for test sieves because of its malleability and previous lower cost. Today however, the cost of the copper material in brass has made stainless-steel mesh the more affordable choice. AND Woven-wire stainless STEEL mesh is much more durable, less likely to contaminate sensitive materials, and maintains its specified openings longer than brass during its service life. • ASTM E11 and ISO 3310-1 test sieves are available in Compliance, Inspection, or Calibration grades, which are three different classes of dimensional tolerances for opening sizes and wire diameters. They come in either Compliance, Inspection, or Calibration Grade. Compliance grade (Standard deviation of 66% that openings meets E11 requirements) sieves are intended for everyday use and their mesh openings are measured in bulk prior to assembly. For applications requiring greater accuracy or traceable documentation, Compliance Sieves can be verified as Inspection or Calibration Grade sieves with higher levels of probability (Standard deviation of 99% and 99.73%, respectively) that the standard deviation of openings in an individual sieve meets specification requirements. • Non-metallic mesh, woven from polyester or nylon filament, is available on non-metallic sieves for unique applications or as a disposable cloth use in two-part sieve frames. AND is useful where the metal is not permissible. Non-metallic mesh sizes are accurate BUT synthetic cloth does not meet ASTM E11 or ISO 3310-1 specifications. • Electroformed mesh opening sizes are square, highly accurate, and very consistent with tolerances to 1 to 2µm (±1 to 2µm for openings from 150µm to 5µm). This sieving media is expensive, and the finer mesh can be fragile, but it is the optimum choice for applications where precise sizing of fine materials is critical. Separately • It is generally left to industry-standard test methods to determine which opening sizes suit a particular sample.
