Stock Shot's Time Machine presents The Bookbinder • from the series Claim to Fame - • • Bookbinding, Like no other, this world has a language of its own. It is a many-sided trade, demanding knowledge of paper, leather, parchment, wood, metals and precious stones... and infinite patience. It is definitely more than straightening a wrinkled piece of old paper. • • A thin paste is first spread on the spine of the book after the binding - bookbinders never say cover - has been taken off. The paste soaks up the old glue (made from animal hides). • • Paste also helps to soak off stickers and other pieces of paper which don't belong on the binding. After that comes the painstaking job of scraping the rest off with a sharp knife. Old books are damaged when stored in places that are too wet or too dry. • Old books, paper had to be refiberd, bleached and disinfected, and the corners of the fitting renewed. In other words, the whole book had to be taken apart to make it presentable. • • These are fibres, also known as cotton linters. They're put into a blender and fine-ground and can then adhere to old paper; the old paper then returns to its original size. The restorer calls this refibering. In this way you can substitute missing pieces with pure cellulose or cellulose fibres. The whole process takes place in demineralised water. • After the paper is carefully taken out of the tray, it is coated with a cellulose glue to make it firm. Finally, it is pressed between felt and fibreboard to retain its structure, and to remove the moisture. • • Behind the tomes of the Dutch Civil Code the next move takes place in the bookbinders saga. What looks like hopelessly crumpled-up paper is put into order and carefully flattened out. • The paper is sprayed with alcohol, which makes it lie flat and straight. Then another meticulous measuring job follows. • • And, of course, it again disappears into the press to dry and stabilise between thick felt sheets. And.. Voila. As good as new. When all the pages have had their turn, they are put together, folded into quires and sewed. A book is sewn on a sewing press. The vertical pieces of twine, the binding cords, will later form the raised bands on the spine of the book. • • • broadcast footage: http://www.stockshot.nl/stockshots/be... • • Music title Brandenburg 4 by Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) licensed under Creative Commons Attribution 3.0
