Become an SSHO the Right Way; Online and at Your Pace • To comply with EM 385-1-1 regulations, contractors working federally funded projects must designate a SSHO who understands the safety requirements of (USACE). • EM 385-1-1 Manual • The EM 385-1-1 manual specifies safety requirements for military, civilian or contractor personnel working USACE projects. The 900 pages of standards and regulations range from program management to safety equipment. • Site Safety and Health Officers • A SSHO is on a work site to perform safety and health management, inspections, and safety enforcement and ensure the project is safe and compliant with USACE requirements. • EM 385-1-1 Training • EM 385-1-1 courses cover essential health, safety, and environmental regulations and may include real-life scenarios, tips on how to prepare an Accident Prevention Plan, complete Activity Hazard Analysis (AHA) forms, and serve as the SSHO of a company. • There are generally three types of EM 385 training: • • 8-Hour EM 385-1-1 Training: • competency maintaining with an 8-hour annual training. • • 16-Hour EM 385-1-1 Training: • Hazard Recognition Training for all contractors, workers, and construction employees on military contracts. • • 40-Hour EM 385-1-1 Training: • Designated SSHOs on federally funded projects that require EM 385-1-1 compliance complete 40-hours of training on the latest version of the EM 385-1-1 manual. • • Certification • The Board of Certified Site Safety and Health Officers has two types of certification.
