Erythromycin is antibiotic from the Macrolides (first agent 1952) • Macrolides are bacterial protein synthesis inhibitors • Works mainly on aerobic gram positive bacteria, also works on some aerobic gram negatives and works on intracellular atypical microorganisms like chlamydia, mycoplasma, legionella and toxoplasma • Used for respiratory tract infections, skin infections and STDs • Side effects include elevated liver enzymes, prolongation of QT interval (heart), ototoxicity and allergic reactions • There is increase in resistance against the erythromycin because it is old agent • Detailed video: • Macrolides Pharmacology: Mechanism of...
