What Would Jeff Do? Dog Training Tip of the Day #43 Bark collars • How do you stop a dog from barking at your house when no one is home? • What Do you do when your landlord puts a note under your door giving you 24 hours to stop your dog from barking since your neighbors are being disturbed? • A Bark collar, and not the air/water or citronella (look what is the ingredients of that and do we want it going up the dogs nose or mouth) • Your are going to hear a lot of ways to stop a dog from barking, but how do you do it when no one is home? Tire out the dog (we are huge fans of exercise) give the dog something to chew in the crate, (i give my dogs bones as well and have no problem with that) but if that is all it took along with soft music, essential oils and covering the crate, then do all of those things please. But what happens when that does not work? • You can get a good bark collar for under $100.00, we like the Garmin Bark Limiter (we actually use them and this is not any type of sponsored post) Also Ecollar Technology and Dogtra make good bark collars. • How do you get the dog used to it, you put it on the dog properly which should be snug, start at the lowest level and do something that would normally trigger the dog to bark, like ringing the doorbell, or knocking on the door. If the dog barks and barks and barks, then it is too low. Go up a level and repeat, if the dog barks and then yips (it is uncomfortable) then stops barking and then lessens their barking and then stop, you have the correct level. • You are not going to mess up the dog, you are not going to make the dog hate the crate (dog probably was not a big fan in the first place usually), what you will teach the dog that there is a negative consequence for an unwanted behavior.
