ECT destroyed my life, but I’m not allowed to talk about it. • When I do, I’m dismissed as a liar or accused of stigmatizing mentally ill people who depend on ECT. Some call me anti-science; others label me a religious extremist. I’ve even been told to stop complaining because I “knew what I was getting into.” • But I didn’t. I was a teen struggling with undiagnosed chronic illness and trauma from a stint in the troubled teen industry (TTI). • I couldn’t drink alcohol, smoke, or get a tattoo—but somehow, I could consent to ECT at 17. • Let’s be real—how can anyone truly consent when their developing brain is marinating in psych meds? • I was told ECT was safe, life-saving, and no longer caused brain damage. • I was told it wouldn’t harm me. Any memory loss? Temporary, they said. None of that was true. • Now, 13 years later, I’m living with brain and nervous system damage, chronic encephalopathy, memory deficits, and signs of neurodegeneration in my 30s. • I’ve faced seizures, heart abnormalities, and other progressive injuries—yet doctors still refuse to help. • And I’m not alone. Far from it! I’ve met hundreds of ECT survivors with similar stories: serious disabilities, no medical support, no acknowledgment. Many of us can’t work, can’t care for ourselves, or even remember what they ate for breakfast. • I don’t deny that ECT helps some people, but acknowledging the harm it causes shouldn’t be taboo—especially when that denial deprives injured patients of the support and treatment they need to recover. • Everyone who undergoes ECT should have access to proper testing and rehabilitation for any side effects.
