The Republic of Kenya gained Independence on December 12, 1963. It was colonized in 1888 as British Kenya. The colonial government oppressed and dispossessed the native Kenyans. As a result, a nationalist movement emerged with the formation of the Kenyan African National Union (KANU), led by Jomo Kenyatta, in 1947. • In 1952, deepening frustration with the exploitative colonial system led to the MAU-MAU uprising led by Dedan Kimathi. Though the rebellion was brutally crushed and defeated with the capture execution of Dedan Kimathi, sufficient pressure had been exerted on the colonialists. • In 1957, the British introduced reforms that allowed native Kenyans to be elected to the Legislative council. Negotiations for Kenyan independence began in 1960 and culminated in Uhuru in 1963, with Jomo Kenyatta as Kenya’s first indigenous Leader. • Buy me a coffee and help me make more YouTube videos - https://www.buymeacoffee.com/declassi... • Join us on Clubhouse and express your opinion in our live debates on this and other topics - https://www.clubhouse.com/join/africa...
