There are numerous improvements compared to the old DirectSound3D engine it was using previously. Now the virtual machine's position and direction have impacts on the sound. Also added is the ability to have proper stereo sound emulation in the 3D world that DirectSound3D made incredibly difficult. The biggest advantage though is full control over the dynamics of the sound and no more bugs with Microsoft's poorly designed DirectSound3D API.
