The first Roman Emperor, Augustus, had a close circle of two friends. The first, Agrippa, was a prominent commander and architect, while the second, Maecenas, was a skilled politician, the man behind the throne. He had no office, but he had the emperor’s ear and was even entrusted with his signet ring. When Augustus felt unwell, he found a much-needed rest at Maecenas’s house. • The mediation and moderation Maecenas so skillfully brought to the service of Augustus, was contrasted by his lavish lifestyle. He built for himself a great mansion in a central position in Rome. He had a passion for collecting gems and jewels and wore them in profusion. His love for costly perfumes was notorious. He was said to have been the first who used a hot swimming bath and had a great liking for ballet and pantomime, amusements which he recommended to his ruler. But above all, he was a great patron of the arts, supporting great poets like Virgil and Horace. • In this exuberance he was the opposite to his reportedly-modest emperor and friend. • In his last days he was tormented with sleeplessness and deserted his favorite city mansion for a villa at Tibur. He had a wife of remarkable beauty, but passed his married life in perpetual quarrels and reconciliations. He had one wife, but married her a thousand times, is Seneca's sarcastic account of his relation to Terentia. It was through her indeed that he lost his position at court. • Early in 8 BC Maecenas died, saying to Augustus with almost his last breath Remember Horace as you remember me. The Emperor gave the promise but was never called on to fulfill it.
