King Penguins Courting at the Start of Mating Season

These King penguins are in the midst of mating season courtship behavior. Notice how they stretch their bodies tall - even leaning toward their partner - relying on cues from the other bird. King penguins exhibit this type of behavior frequently, utilizing posturing frequently to send messages to nearby Kings. • This theory is based on several weeks spent observing and recording the behavior of both Gentoo penguins and King penguins throughout the Falkland Islands. • Foraging in the background is a Kelp goose. • This video was taken at the Volunteer Point King Penguin rookery.
