The remote, unspoiled village of Stehekin in Washington is the centerpiece of Lake Chelan National Recreation Area in the southern most port of North Cascades National Park. Getting there is half the fun. A trip to the head of Lake Chelan is a journey into an unspoiled frontier, forgotten by time. No roads lead to Stehekin, so the only way to arrive here is by charter or personal boat, seaplane or small personal aircraft, or on a Lady of the Lake passenger ferry. Hiking on foot or horseback is another option for getting to Stehekin. Every summer several hundred people hike to Stehekin using an extensive trail network much of which has been in place for 100 years. About 150 of those hikers have made it all the way from Mexico on the Pacific Crest Trail. About 5 miles from the landing, and walking distance from Harlequin Campground is a 3,000 foot grass airstrip, for experienced pilots. A favorite for campers, fishers and hunters, getting to Stehekin is as much fun as being there. For those short on time or looking for a birds eye view, a spectacular plane ride up lake allows you to see the splendor of the lake and surrounding mountains and glaciers from a different perspective. Seaplanes have been a vital transportation source to Stehekin for over 60 years. Stehekin boasts 95 full-time residents, blue-green water fed by glaciers, sub-alpine timber, deer outside your front door, and a kind of magic only found when absolutely lost in nature. Whether you’re looking for outdoor adventure or a place to relax, there’s plenty to do in Stehekin. • Music: Nice And Easy by Audionautix is licensed under a Creative • Commons Attribution license • (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/...) • Artist: http://audionautix.com/
