So as it turns out, this year we’re having Halloween in December instead of October. I think the thing I learned most from this piece is that post-production is No Joke 😳 • One of the challenges of Covid-safe performing, when you don’t know any other dancers taking precautions, is not having access to other cast members when you want to do an ensemble piece. Inspired by Kathryn Morgan (@kathryn_morgan)'s one-woman snow scene from 2020, I decided to not let that stop me. To be fair, a big part of why I was able to even think about attempting to pull this off is I have an amazing crew (aka an amazing set of parents) who are creative and skilled and up for MacGyvering whatever challenge we might face or take on. I’m incredibly lucky and grateful to be part of our extraordinary family team. • I’ve always loved this scene from Giselle, the eerie backdrop and the ghostly dancers, but I never thought the music quite fit the mood or the storyline. I listened to a lot of Tom Lehrer growing up, so when we started batting around ideas for something else to dance the Wili scene to, I knew his “Masochism Tango” was the obvious choice. There are a lot of masochistic stories in ballet, but to me, Giselle is definitely near the top of the list. • It was pretty difficult to learn seven different parts and attempt to dance each Wili exactly the same, but now at the end of the process I’m glad I took on the challenge. I especially loved figuring out how to make the ballet choreography have a little flair of tango. A big thank-you to my dad who helped me learn how to walk and dance in tango shoes; I’ve never worn heels before, and if in future I ever have the thought that dancing in pointe shoes is hard, all I’ll need to do to push on through is remember this piece with its narrow 3 inch heels 👡 • . • Original choreography - Jean Coralli and Jules Perrot, with modifications from revivals re-staged by Marius Petipa • Adapted choreography - Adrienne Ballerine • Music by Tom Lehrer @6funswede • Tom Lehrer - The Masochism Tango • Costume materials and supplies from @tutu.comofficial with patterns by Tutus That Dance • Tutus that dance • . • #ballet #classicalballet #giselle #balletparody #masochismtango #tomlehrer #soloensemble #covidsafeproduction #virtualperformance
