(12 Aug 2012) STORYLINE: • A group of Olympic athletes from around the world has backed a campaign organised by British Prime Minister David Cameron against child malnutrition in vulnerable countries such as Somalia. • One year after up to 100-thousand Somalis died in the country's worst famine in generations, tens of thousands of displaced people still live in camps in Mogadishu and the UN says 2.5 (m) million people need aid to survive. • The situation is nowhere near as bad as one year ago when 3.8 (m) million Somalis were affected, the UN says. • The U.N. declared a famine in Somalia last July as hundreds of thousands of people set out on foot in search of food, filling refugee camps in Mogadishu, Ethiopia and Kenya. • The U.N., which declared the famine over in February, never released a death toll. • But the British government estimated between 50-thousand and 100-thousand people died. • Some 12 (m) million people needed assistance at the height of last year's famine. • The U.N. says that 18 percent of children born in the country will not reach the age of 5. A third of children are moderately or severely underweight. Only a third of children are enrolled in school. • Aid groups are increasing their efforts in Mogadishu. • Sunday's gathering - on the last day of the Olympic Games - brings together leaders from Brazil, Kenya, Bangladesh, India and Ireland. • Also invited are Ethiopian distance runner Haile Gebrselassie and Brazilian football star Pele. • • • Find out more about AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/HowWeWork • Twitter:   / ap_archive   • Facebook:   / aparchives    • Instagram:   / apnews   • • • You can license this story through AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/metadata/you...
