The plasma membrane is a fundamental structure present in every cell, both prokaryotic and eukaryotic. Composed mainly of phospholipids, proteins, and carbohydrates, it plays crucial roles in maintaining cellular integrity and regulating the transport of substances. • The phospholipids form a lipid bilayer, with the hydrophilic heads facing the cell's internal and external watery environments, while the hydrophobic tails are oriented toward the interior of the membrane. This arrangement gives the plasma membrane its selective barrier characteristic, controlling the passage of molecules through it. • Proteins in the membrane play various roles, from transporting specific substances to participating in cell signalling processes. Some are anchored to the outer surface, while others completely traverse the membrane, known as integral proteins. • Carbohydrates, often linked to proteins (glycoproteins) or lipids (glycolipids), form the glycocalyx. This structure is crucial for cellular recognition and specific interactions, playing an important role in intercellular communication. • Additionally, the plasma membrane is dynamic, allowing the flexibility and fluidity required for processes such as endocytosis and exocytosis. Endocytosis involves the uptake of particles through vesicles, while exocytosis releases substances from the cell. • In summary, the plasma membrane is a complex and vital structure that maintains cellular homeostasis, regulates intercellular communication, and controls the flow of substances, ensuring the proper function and survival of cells. • Animation Director: Sandeep V.
