How Does a Glacier Erode the Landcape? is part of the Glaciology In a Minute series. Definitions of some key words used can be found below. • This video explores the different ways in which a glacier erodes the landscape, in particular Abrasion and Plucking. It also looks into the effect this erosion has on the landscape, and looks into some formations left behind from erosion (Striations and U-Shaped Valleys). • This video was produced by Robert Jones and Bethany Hudd graduates from the University of St Andrews for the GeoBus project. You can also follow us on twitter (@GeoBus_StA) and facebook (GeoBus St Andrews)! • Definitions: • Freeze Thaw Weathering - when water flows into cracks in the ground and freezes it expands by 9%, forcing the rocks apart and breaking them up. • Plucking - when a glacier freezes on to and around rocks in the ground and, as it flows downhill, pulls the rocks out of the ground leaving behind a jagged landscape. • Abrasion - the rocks and debris that are entrained into the base and sides of the glacier scrape along the ground and wear it away like sandpaper, leaving behind a smooth landscape. • Striations - the scratches left behind by a glacier caused by Abrasion. • U-Shaped Valley - A deeper, wider valley caused when a glacier flows down a V-Shaped valley and erodes it.
